A Study of the Significance of Electroencephalography in Childhppd Epilepsy

Abstract
We analyzed the findings of electroencephalography obtained form 210 patients with childhood epilepsy.
@ES We could find the results as follows:
@EN 1. The ration of male and female in childhood epilepsy was 1.1 : 1
2. Onset below 1 year of age in childhood epilepsy was observed in 24% of all, and 52% of all patients started seizure before 4 years of age.
3. Among the 116 cases were belonged to partial seizure.
4. 101 (48%) cases revealed specific abnormality with paroxysmal epileptiform activities in any recording of serial GGE's and nonspecific abnoramality was noticed in 27 cases (13%), borderline abnormality in 13 cases (6%) and normal findings in
69
cases (33%) were observesd.
5. 101 cases of specific EEG abnormalities could be classified as spike activity noticed in 42 cases, sharp waves in 35 cases, spike and wave discharges in 18 cases, hypsarrhythmia in 5 cases and burst-suppression in 1 cases.
6. The specific EEG abnormalities were noted in 65% of partial seizure and 26% of generalized seizure. The proportion of specific abnormality in partial seizure was larger than that of generalized sezure.
7. Among the partial seizure, the specific EEG abnormalitie were noted in 74% of secondary generalized seizure 47% of simple partial seizure and 36% of complex partial seizure was smaller than that of other types of partial seizure.
8. Normal findings were sustained in 33% of patients taken over 2 times of recordings, and sustained same abnormalities were noted only in 29% of patients. Different findings including normal and abnormal recordings in repeated tracing were seen
in 30%
of patients.
9. The prognosis was recordings good. 75% of patients followed for over 1 year had no seizure during the treatment, 21% of them had improvment in seizure frequency and 4% of them had poor response to the anticonvulsant medication.
